A day and an hour that I wish for...

The route around the small rocky tooth called “Dent du Ratier” at 2,660 meters above sea level takes 25 hours to walk. This itinerary surrounds the west of Queyras and can be done from mid-May to late October. Especially in autumn, the landscapes express all their changing chromatic beauty, when light floods the larches. It is an easy walk, therefore suitable for many enthusiasts and newbies eager to discover the landscapes and villages of the Queyras Regional Nature Park.

The ideal is to divide the walk into five days, overnighting in the characteristic mountain villages.

The first stop is in Arvieux, at the Furfande Mountain Hut. It’s the opportunity to take a closer look at “Dent du Ratier” – this small rocky “tooth” on the French side – after climbing a forest of pines and larches. At the Furfande pass (2,546 meters) you will be in front of one of the most beautiful pastures in the region: the Furfande and its one hundred Alpine huts. Here the hike ends with a breathtaking view of the surrounding peaks, looking at some chamois that walk around here all year round.

The second stage allows you to “descend” to Villargaudin through fascinating alpine pastures and along the Lauze pass you can admire many picturesque mountain chalets. Thus, you reach the village of Villargaudin with its ancient furnaces, fountain and chapel.

The third day is spent in the eastern part of Queyras, after crossing the Guil and visiting the small hamlet of Montbardon. From here you reach Saint-Véran which retains the record of the “highest inhabited village in Europe”. It is therefore evident that the charm of falling asleep among the Alps, so close to the stars, is already worth the trip in itself. But the Alpine village of Saint-Véran also has many attractions that make it an ideal destination in winter – close as it is to the Queyras ski area – and all year round like the Maison du Soleil, a science museum full of activities for children and where special evenings are organized to admire the sky from the terrace of the Astronomical Observatory at 2,936 m altitude. To relax, you can make a regenerating stop at the Alta Peyra Spa at 2,040 m altitude, inside the 4-star hotel Alta Peyra.

From Saint Véran you can go to Château-Ville-Vieille where you must stop to admire one of the most famous jewels of the Queyras: the Fort-Queyras. A fort perched on a glacial lock from which the gorges of the Guil dominate.

From Ville-Vieille or from the small traditional village of Aiguilles, let’s head to the hamlet of Meyriès, crossing a beautiful landscape with a taste of Provence. You will also cross Le Rouet, a village where time seems to have stopped… And your day ends in Souliers, a delightful little village lost in the mountains at the foot of the Grand Rochebrune.

The last leg of the journey takes us to Arvieux. An easy walk will take you to Lake Roue, a charming and peaceful place near which there are at least two viewpoints that offer a breathtaking view of the Guil valley and the Combe du Queyras for one last photograph from the High Alps.
